Workshop Description

Uncertainty, surprise announcements, and jeopardized funding have created a chaotic time for so many essential organizations. In times like these, video can be extremely powerful. It can help raise awareness, supercharge fundraising, and captivate clients, donors, and everyone in-between - and particularly now, it can reassert the necessity and vitality of what you provide. But what kind of video? What's the best way to use it on social media? And how do you know when to DIY and when to invest in a high-end production company? This workshop guides participants in crafting visual storytelling tailored to specific audiences, from selecting the right stories for donors to integrating visuals into appeals and events. Attendees will learn how to equip staff and board members to capture compelling stories without overwhelming their workload and discover how to find meaningful visuals in everyday moments.

Who Should Attend

Nonprofit professionals interested in bettering their video editing and branding skills.

What the Training Will Cover

  • Craft visual storytelling based on your audience. Learn to choose the best stories for donors, incorporating visuals into fundraising appeals, using visual storytelling to supercharge events, and customizing content for specific groups.

  • Equip staff and board members to capture and convey stories, as the best storytellers are often those closest to the mission. Develop a strategy that includes staff but doesn’t overwhelm them.

  • Learn how to find compelling stories and visuals in what some might call “boring”, and how to capture powerful moments without disrupting one’s work.

  • Learn how to build a storytelling library. Savvy nonprofit leaders recognize that visual storytelling isn’t a one-off project. It’s a strategy that requires commitment, which ultimately results in a library of photos and videos that can be tailored to any occasion.

About the Trainer

Matt Pearl's work has always been driven by two guideposts: meaningful and memorable. As a journalist for 20+ years, first locally and then nationally, he pushed to report about issues the media often overlooks: Housing. Education. Health care. The environment. Social justice. And many more. He traveled the world and was honored with dozens of local, regional, and national awards. He’s also an author who has written two editions of The Solo Video Journalist, a how-to book for aspiring storytellers and multimedia journalists published by Routledge and Focal Press.

He’s spoken at regional and national journalism conferences, and in his current work he has given presentations for the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Atlanta and the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference's Tactical Thursdays. Today he runs Pearl Impact Media. His whole goal is uplifting nonprofits through meaningful, memorable, affordable video storytelling. He remains in Atlanta but travels nationwide to support his clients. He carries his foundations as a journalist and storyteller to this critical work.
