WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Through our train the trainers workshop, we will guide you on how to be a better online or in-person trainer and gain practical skills you can use right away. In this workshop, we discuss how to lead engaging small group exercises and practice methods for managing participants. We cover adult learning theory and practices, ways to make mandatory trainings fun, methods for online and in-person instructional design and strategies to incorporate equity and inclusion into a training, workshop or orientation.

What The Training Will Cover

PREPARING FOR A TRAINING 

  • Planning a training to match your goals and participants expectations

  • Understand how to prepare for workshop and frame for your audience so they know what to expect 

  • Review how to align your presentation to the technology

  • Understand why we get nervous speaking in public and review ways to manage your public speaking anxiety


OPENING A TRAINING

  • Explain how to develop opening exercises to engage participants at the beginning of an online workshop 

  • Understand how to facilitate activities to create group cohesion and building community 

  • Participate in different exercises with the goal of understanding how to adapt these activities for your audience


ENGAGED LEARNING

  • Analyze how to incorporate concepts of engaged and deep learning and connecting activities to learning objectives

  • Understand how to manage different learning styles 

  • Review how to use handouts and supplemental learning tools 


BUILDING YOUR TRAINER TOOLKIT 

  • Review platforms tools and structures to use to build your personal tooklit whether you train online or in person  


CREATING SLIDES

  • Compare sample presentation slides from real workshops

  • Examine what works well in preparing slides and what to avoid


LEARNING OBJECTIVES & INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

  • Understand how to develop and craft learning objectives that focus on outcomes and results rather than topics

  • Assess how to develop learning objectives that match the content provided

  • Understand how to develop content that is applicable from theory to concept and how to design content in a workshop so that adult learners can apply what they are learning


INTEGRATING CONCEPTS OF ADULT LEARNING & MEETING PARTICIPANTS EXPECTATIONS

  • Review how adults learn best and methods to integrate adult learning styles to ensure effective training delivery

  • Understand how to meet participants expectations even if lead mandatory trainings 

  • Discuss how to incorporate adult learning theory into workshops, trainings and orientations


DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION 

  • Understand how to incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion in a training, workshop or meeting 

  • Review structures to ensure inclusive design approaches in meetings, trainings and workshops

  • Practice how to manage difficult situations and conversations in a training. *Be prepared to think about real examples that you have experienced as a participant or trainer

  • Analyze how to design professional development in an equitable way

Online Train the Trainer is capped at 30 attendees. This is an interactive workshop and must be restricted due to online training capacity. Each workshop session is live. Registrants receive slides & handouts. It is expected participants will be able to be on camera and able to unmute for some portions of the training to participate in discussions. Full recordings are not provided. This training must be done sequentially. If you miss a session, please reach out to program@nonprofitlearninglab.org

ABOUT THE TRAINER

This training is led by Dr. Leah Weiner who has a doctorate in education and psychology from Pepperdine University. Leah Weiner is the Founder and CEO of the Nonprofit Learning Lab. Leah’s approach to training focuses on making sure that the information provided helps participants solve a problem or create a solution related to their professional work.
