WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
A trauma-informed approach creates an environment in organizations that seeks to recognize and respond to the impact of trauma on individuals. This method involves understanding, recognizing, and addressing the effects of all types of trauma.
A nonprofit that utilizes trauma informed approach in their services, programs and support of staff and community seeks to*:
ensures physical and emotional safety for clients, staff and volunteers and builds trust through transparency in organizational operations and decisions.
utilizes peer support and/or mutual self-help to establish safety and hope.
emphasizes partnership, collaboration and leveling power differences
prioritizes client empowerment and individualized treatment by honoring each person's voice and choices.
offers gender-responsive services and recognizes historical trauma of all individuals.
avoid re-traumatization and create an environment where individuals who have experienced trauma feel safe and supported, acknowledging that trauma can have lasting effects on physical, emotional, and mental health.

Staff may find themselves in situations where being aware of a trauma informed approach could enhance and better support participants, staff, volunteers and individuals in programs. The community systems or organizations that individuals interact with can seek to create methods and strategies within their programs and services to be trauma informed.
Please note: This training is designed for individuals who lead programs and services and aim to support their clients, participants, volunteers and community by becoming more trauma-aware in their approach. It is not intended for staff with a clinical background, such as therapists, psychologists or those with a bachelors in social work or a masters in social work.

What The Training Will Cover
Session 1
Review the foundational concepts of trauma theory and trauma informed care and how these concepts are applicable to nonprofit services and programs in a non-clinical setting
Understand trauma’s impact on an individual's level of engagement and learning in potential program and service in a non-clinical setting
Analyze key assumptions of a trauma informed approach, how these assumption impact or intersect with nonprofit's ability to implement programs and services and practical strategies to incorporate aspects of a trauma informed approach
Session 2
Understand program development or design pitfalls in re-traumatization of participants and the benefit of program partnerships if a holistic approach is not possible.
Discuss areas for growth and development within your organization’s own programs, services and policies to be more trauma informed
Review the need for flexibility and ways to create flexibility in programs and services to support participants
Session 3
Review scenarios and discuss how you would approach these situations, considering how your organization’s current methods align with these real-life examples.
Identify trauma informed approach strategies and determine the next steps to incorporate them into your organization within the context of a non-clinical setting
Analyze a potential checklist as a framework and reflect on the relevance and effectiveness of these ideas in the context of your own organization

Trauma Informed Approach: Guidance to Support Programs, People & Operations is capped at 30 attendees. This is an interactive workshop and must be restricted due to online training capacity. Each workshop session is live. Registrants receive slides & handouts. It is expected participants will be able to be on camera and able to unmute for some portions of the training to participate in discussions. Full recordings are not provided. ABOUT THE TRAINER
This training is led by Dr. Leah Weiner who has a doctorate in education and psychology from Pepperdine University. Leah Weiner is the Founder and CEO of the Nonprofit Learning Lab. Leah’s approach to training focuses on making sure that the information provided helps participants solve a problem or create a solution related to their professional work.
