10/15/2024, 10/22/2024, 10/29/2024

9:00 am - 10:30 am PT | 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm ET

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

A trauma-informed approach creates an environment in organizations that seeks to recognize and respond to the impact of trauma on individuals. This method involves understanding, recognizing, and addressing the effects of all types of trauma.

A nonprofit that utilizes trauma informed approach in their services, programs and support of staff and community seeks to*:

  1. ensures physical and emotional safety for clients, staff and volunteers and builds trust through transparency in organizational operations and decisions.

  2. utilizes peer support and/or mutual self-help to establish safety and hope.

  3. emphasizes partnership, collaboration and leveling power differences

  4. prioritizes client empowerment and individualized treatment by honoring each person's voice and choices.

  5. offers gender-responsive services and recognizes historical trauma of all individuals.

  6. avoid re-traumatization and create an environment where individuals who have experienced trauma feel safe and supported, acknowledging that trauma can have lasting effects on physical, emotional, and mental health.

Does your organization utilize a trauma informed  approach? How might your programs improve retention of participants and volunteers utilizing a trauma informed approach? How could becoming more trauma-aware enhance the services and programs your organization offers? Nonprofit professionals lead and support a variety of programs and services from after school activities, leadership programs, mentor support, volunteer engagement, educational programs, and advocacy programs.

Trauma can impact a person’s individual sense of safety. Staff may find themselves in situations where being aware of a trauma informed approach could enhance and better support participants, staff, volunteers and individuals in programs.  The community systems or organizations that individuals interact with can seek to create methods and strategies within their programs and services to be trauma informed.

Please note: This training is designed for individuals who lead programs and services and aim to support their clients, participants, volunteers and community by becoming more trauma-aware in their approach. It is not intended for staff with a clinical background, such as therapists, psychologists or those with a bachelors in social work or a masters in social work.
